I’m trying something new. Monday through Friday I’ll be sharing a two-minute idea about fatherhood. I hope you find value in these quick posts.
Children deserve to be bored.
They deserve to kick a rock down the street,
They deserve to doodle on the back of a napkin,
They deserve to cast a line and never feel a nibble,
They deserve to watch the stars appear in the night sky,
They deserve to stare out the window of a car and daydream,
They deserve to not be excused until everyone finishes eating,
They deserve to sit patiently as their parents talk to a neighbour.
Children deserve boredom because boredom begets quietness and quietness is where creativity happens, where hobbies are discovered, where patience is learned, where listening develops, where God talks to us.
The algorithms… The blue light… The devices… These are in competition with boredom, with quietness, and with God.
Children deserve to be bored.

Well composed! I like the line you drew from boredom to creativity and hearing God.
